Chemical : Definition

A chemical is any substance that is composed of one or more atoms of an element or of a compound consisting of different elements. The term chemical is used to refer to a specific substance composition as if it were in its pure form. For example, when speaking about sodium chloride (NaCl), one refers to the specific NaCl molecule and not to any mixture of it. Here, NaCl is understood as a pure substance that cannot be separated further into multiple components by physical separation, such as, filtration or distillation. Filtering a solution of NaCl still yields solid NaCl after the liquid is removed.
